Roofing is the covering of a structure, consisting of all structures and materials required to support it upon the building’s walls or upon uprights, which provide protection from the elements (including sun, rain, snow, and extreme temperature) and against intrusion by man. A roof, unlike other parts of the building, is not usually constructed in a single, unvaried fashion. Rather, there are many different types of roofing systems that can be used successfully in combination with each other, depending upon various environmental factors such as location, climactic conditions, cost of materials, and desired aesthetics of roofing.

Among the most popular roofing systems today is the tile system, which consists of two layers – one a thin layer of asphalt that acts as the base for the tile, which may be built up over an underlying metal or wood frame. The second layer, a thick layer of roofing felt, provides insulation and a waterproof barrier against moisture, as well as noise, wind, heat, and light. Because it has a tight weave and is very durable, asphalt-based roofing felt can be applied both as a finish to the tile and as a layer on the roofing itself. It also serves as a protective, water-proof layer against damage from rain or hail. Another type of roofing system commonly used for residential construction is the roll roofing system, which consists of a number of horizontal sheets of materials that are stacked and interconnected on a central support.
